Immobilized Liquid Extraction™ CapsNew Improved Design (ordering information)
Simple Two-Step Method (1) Extract: Place ILE Cap on sample-containing vessel. Invert vessel such that sample is directly exposed to immobilized solvent (polymer). Agitate Vessel.
The Immobilized Liquid Extraction™ (ILE) Cap is regular bottle or vial cap with a siloxane-elastomer coated septum. Targeted analytes are extracted from a sample into the immobilized elastomer coating, from which they are back-extracted (eluted) into a small amount of mobile phase. The new ILE Cap utilizes a unique well design that ensures that the cap is not sealed by the extracting media, but rather by a contaminant-free PTFE sealing surface. ILE Caps have been designed to utilize beneficial aspects of other sample preparation procedures while avoiding their numerous shortcomings. ILE Caps are available with two volumes of extracting phase: 10µL or 25µL. Using a cap with more volume will increase the relative ratio of extracting phase to sample volume (phase ratio). This increase in extracting phase volume allows an analyst to work with larger samples while still maintaining a favorable phase ratio. The benefit of using caps with less extracting phase is that equilibration is achieved more rapidly. We recommend that 10µL caps only with sample volumes less than 10mL. ILE Cap Method Development Kits are offered with 25µL of phase because they are best suited to a wider range of sample volumes. Interested in custom method development?
ILE Cap Method Development Kit - Immobilized Liquid Extraction Cap extraction kits are a risk-free way to develop a method for your specific application. For $100 (a value of $140), each kit includes five ILE Caps of each phase (PDMS, Acrylate, Fluoro, Phenyl), an ILE Back-extraction adapter, and full method development assistance. If you are unable to develop an appropriate method, simply return the plates to us within thirty days of receipt for a full refund. Or, if you decide to place a second order, the original purchase price of $100 will be credited toward it.
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) - Relatively non-polar phase for extracting hydrophobic compounds. It has been experimentally shown that PDMS exhibits polarity and extractive properties similar to n-octanol. It is recommended as a general purpose ILE phase and is suitable for a wide range of extractions.

Polydiphenylsiloxane (Phenyl) - This is a more polar phase, and would be expected to display enhanced selectivity for aromatic compounds due to pi-bonding potential - a similar effect to extracting with toluene.
*Contact us for bulk pricing and standard order.
Trifluoropropylmethylsiloxane (Fluoro) - This phase provides enhanced selectivity for extracting compounds with lone pairs of electrons.

Polyacrylate (Acrylate) - Very polar phase which is used to extract hydrophilic and very polar compounds.

ILE Cap Back-Extraction Adapter - Machined PTFE adapters allow an analyst to back-extract (elute) from a 24mm ILE Cap directly into a 9mm screw top autosampler vial (9-425 cap size; 12x32mm).
